200th Anniversary of the Colne Bridge Mill Fire

Wednesday 14 February 2018 was the 200th anniversary of the dreadful fire, which occurred at Atkinson's Mill in Colne Bridge when 17 children and young people were killed.  Several events took place to commemorate this tragedy.

The first event was on Saturday 10 February when a service was held in Kirkheaton Parish Church.  The moving service was led by the Rev Ian Jones and attended by around 200 people, including the Chairman of Kirkburton Parish Council.  A plaque was unveiled by Kathy Butterworth, a descendent of Sarah Moody, one of the children who survived the fire (pictured above).  It is hoped to have it permanently installed in the Beaumont Arms.
