Calendar of Community Events

All community groups and 'not for profit' organisations throughout the Parish are welcome to submit information regarding their forthcoming events, and we will be pleased to include them on the list below free of charge.  Please allow 7 days before the event, if possible.  We will also display any information notices. However, we cannot display notices of a commercial or political nature.

'By the People, For the People' : New Exhibition at the National Coal Mining Museum
2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the nationalisation of the coal industry in Britain.  To mark this important and historic event, the National Coal Mining Museum will be launching a new special exhibition which opens on Monday 3 April and will run until 6 December. Please see: for full details.

History of Sport in Shelley - New Display in Shelley Museum : Saturday 24 June
10am - 5pm and Sunday 25 June 12 noon - 4pm  Includes an exhibition in the Methodist Hall

West Yorks Trading Standards Talk : Scams, Frauds & Safer Project at Kirkburton Library on 27 June at 2pm

Virtual Walk around historic Kirkheaton : Thursday 29 June at 7.30 pm

A talk by the Kirkheaton Family History Group at Kirkheaton Community Centre.  £2.50, pay on the door.

Shelley Garden Festival : Sunday 2 July from 11am to 5pm
17 gardens are open to the public, many serving refreshments.  Dearne Lea will be open all day and hosting children's activities from 2-4pm.  Shelley Museum will be open with a new display.  Tickets £5 (accompanied children are free).  For tickets & further information please contact Ann on 01484 604468 or Malcolm on 01484 609032.

Thurstonland Village Cricket Match: Challenge for the Vicar's Vase on Friday 14 July from 6.30pm. All Welcome. Barbecue. Please contact Sean on 01484 683375 if you would like to play. 

Shelley Gala: Sunday 16 July on the Cricket Field from 1.30 - 4.30
The King and Queen's parade starts from the Flying Ferret at 1pm.  There will also be a number of stalls and activities: children's rides, bouncy castles, new demonstrations etc.  The aim is to have a fun event, raise money for village groups and bring the community together.  If you would like to help, please contact Helen Bolton on 07456 474375. Deaf or Hard of Hearing? There's a new way to contact the Police.  A new emergency SMS system has been developed by the RNID, BT, DCLG and other partners to allow people with hearing difficulties to report an incident or in an emergency. Please see for further information.
